Abstract
This report concerns excavations at three late Venta Salada phase (Late Postclassic) archaeological sites in the Tehuacan Valley, Mexico. The general objectives of the 1973 field season were to investigate the range of variation in residential units within communities, the internal divisions of communities, the possibility of recognizing occupational specialization and social stratification within and between communities, and the degree of correspondence between surface remains and excavation results. Growth of residences at all sites was by addition of rooms around patios. No major differences were found between sites in size of residences. Tr62 (Coxcatlan Viejo) differed from other Venta Salada sites investigated because of the absence of burials. Variation among burials recovered at other sites do not appear to reflect social stratification. Spindle whorls were found in nearly all residences. Abundant evidence of ceramic manufacture was unearthed at Tr62, including a small updraft kiln. The author anticipates that this evidence will bear on specialization in ceramic manufacture. Data are also available on occupational specialization in salt making. Investigation of the correspondence between surface and subsurface remains requires further analysis of the excavation data.
