Abstract
The work was undertaken to answer questions relating to Viking examples, certain features of which can now be attributed to the casting process. Differences arising from using molds of different fabrics (sand, soapstone, and fired clay) were assessed. Little or no silver loss occurred as a result of casting, and it is suggested that ingots could be cast to relatively precise weights for economic transactions.
