The evolution of English glass bottles from 1652 to 1832 is studied by using ratios of particular dimensions. Changes in design are characterized by changes in ratios which are then usable both historically to describe the changes and diagnostically for the purpose of dating new finds. Great accuracy in dating is not possible because of the sources of variability in the results and because of the introduction of standardization. However, a provisional classification based on morphology is derived which might serve as a framework to assist further work. -- AATA
