The phenomenological theory of martensite formation developed by Wechsler et al. has been used to predict the indices of plane interfaces formed during annealing between grains of alpha-and beta-brass, as well as the habit plane of precipitation of Fe4N, and Fe3P, from alpha-iron. The implications resulting from the possiblitiy of extending the martensite theory to diffusion controlled nucleation and growth transformations are discussed.
