Abstract
Generally restoration is a pretension of a creation of a survival which does not exist. Major architects working in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries reflect certain trends and aesthetic values which are outgrowths of the general social attitude. These are discussed in relation to cathedral restorations which illustrate the author's thesis.
