A survey of selected documents on growing indigo, often referred to in this text as a lost art, and on indigo mills as they were run in Asia, the Caribbean islands, the South of the United States, etc. Taking as an example a Santo Domingo (now Haiti) mill, a section describes the buildings arrangement, staffing (the origins of the slaves, their diet, health conditions), the three vats needed, the kind of work in the fields, the gathering of the crop, the maceration, vigorous stirring to bring about oxidation and sediment formation.
