Abstract
This paper describes the systematic examination of the materials and methods of 15 drawings attributed to Martin Johnson Heade. The study provides several smaller, well-defined groups of drawings based upon paper type and stylistic similarities which are useful for further art historical consideration. Use of the scanning electron microscope, polarizing microscope, and visual analysis confirms the authenticity of the body of 15 drawings to the late 19th century. There is still no direct evidence to affirm or deny attribution to M. J. Heade on the basis of this technical and visual analysis. See also 21-1416 for reference to entire book. -- AATA
