The author describes the subject matter, printing techniques, and materials employed in creating Ukiyo-e prints. Information regarding how to handle properly and preserve the prints, including conservation procedures and guidelines for storage and display, is provided. The author counters the view that the black discoloration of lead pigments was anticipated by artists, and recommends treating the discoloration with ethereal hydrogen peroxide or ethereal solution of hydrogen peroxide. (Abstractor's note: The solution (a 1: 1 mixture of 3% hydrogen peroxide and ether) converts lead sulfide to lead sulfate. The two chemicals are mixed and then separate; the ether on top picks up the free oxygen from the hydrogen peroxide, and the O₂ converts the lead. ) Also, bleaching and deacidification are not generally recommended because colors may be affected.
