The author attempts to enumerate the various occupations of builders and craftsmen in Islamic Iran, and their position in society. A short review of previously published material and an appendix listing the names and occupations of over 100 builders and craftsmen serve to cover the field to date. Many of the names and occupations are found in building inscriptions which mention the people who worked on the construction. -- AATA
