Major textile collections in Stockholm are described and a brief history of the foundation of the first Swedish textile conservation lab in 1908 is given. A discussion of the state of preservation of various textiles follows with particular attention given to archaeological textiles found in Northern Europe and the condition of many textiles owned by the individual parish churches in Sweden. Methods of cleaning are discussed, with preferences being given to wet cleaning. A description of the water treatment is given. Methods of using an additional support and impregnation follow with attention to sewing and chemical adhesives, pointing out pros and cons of both. The impregnation of a Coptic tunic with Modocoll E and experiments with Luviscol are briefly discussed.
