This paper was originally presented at the meeting of the I.I.C. American Group in Oberlin, Ohio in June, 1971. The author describes her procedures for treating so called Color Field paintings by such artists as Frankenthaler, Noland and Louis. The problem involves large areas of unpainted canvas as well as areas lightly coated (stained) and heavily painted. Fabric work-edges are sewn onto the tacking edge of the paintings and the enlarged canvas is attached to a work stretcher. Surface grime is removed front and back with dry cleaners such as Opaline erasers and wall paper cleaners. Unpainted areas are washed with Orvus WA Paste and water. Cleaning of colors and mounting on a permanent stretcher are described.
