Abstract
Mössbauer spectroscopy is used to identify the iron compounds responsible for the magnetism of soil samples derived from sedimentary rocks. The high susceptibility component of a soil sample from an archaeological site is shown to be maghaemite (gammaFe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub>). The suggestion of Le Borgne that this may be produced during the burning of organic material is shown to be feasible. -- AATA
