Abstract
After pointing out the hazards of transporting museum objects, this paperback booklet describes how to inspect a specimen and underlines the importance of photographic and written documentation of the conditions found. Precautions in lending include investigation of the borrower's competence. Methods and materials for packing are clearly described and well illustrated. Advice on choice of shippers, insurance and the recording and reporting of damage provides many helpful suggestions. A concluding section uses stepby-step photographs to show pre-shipping documentation, packing a framed painting, constructing and packing a box and packing a fragile specimen for overseas shipment. The instructions are addressed to small museums lacking the services of a trained conservator.
