Once assumed to be a unit, a cross, corpus, and base of copper gilt with champlevé enamel on cross and base were discovered to be made at separate times. The base and corpus is 12th century Mosan; the cross a later reconstruction. Differences include: the symbols of Matthew and John have interchanged incorrect names and other inscribed names were incorrect and meaningless; the inscription above Christ's head is irregular; the serpent symbolizing evil under Christ's feet is alien to Mosan or any Medieval style; the enamel at the cross lack the boldness of design and technique seen in the base; the enamel from the cross proved to be very hard, thus corresponding to enamels made recently, while that from the base was very brittle and broke with the slight touch of a needle, as is characteristic of enamels of considerable age; spectrographic analysis of small particles of metal indicates that the cross and base were not made at the same time; the composition of the metal of the cross varies from typical modern alloys, suggesting that it was not made in the immediate past. The corpus is genuine, but it cannot be proved whether it was meant to be on the original cross that went with the base. -- AATA
