In order to obtain a better notion of the proper significance of washing (old) textiles, the various aspects of the process of washing are discussed from a theoretical point of view. This is followed by a brief survey of the constitution of detergents and their function in the process of washing. Finally, attention is paid to cleaning by means of organic liquids, and the composition of various prescriptions for detergents suitable for washing ancient textiles is discussed. -- AATA
