Discusses the need for studying native methods of object construction and use of materials in order to make better informed conservation treatment decisions. Describes, with illustrations, the materials, structure, and techniques of Ndebele native beadwork and methods used to adhere loose beads, reattach broken threads, and repair slits. Four case study objects from the South African Museum are described, along with their problems and solutions. Adhesives were used in order to hold beads in place, as well as reconstruction of missing areas with new beads. No attempt is made to distinguish the restored areas from the original materials since beads of similar size and color to the originals are used, along with cotton thread, which was used in construction of the object. The museum aims to maintain its beadwork at 50-55% relative humidity, 19-21°C and below 150 lux. -- AATA
