Abstract
Age estimation of soils and sediments using the amino acid racemizaiton dating technique has traditionally been carried out using discrete systems such as shell, bone, and wood that have been trapped within the matrix during deposition. It is suggested that the technique has potential for determining ages in open soil systems. A rationale for dating in such environments is presented and evidence given for the existence of protected fractions in soil that contain nitrogen that has aged. -- AATA
