Abstract
The repair work carried out on the York Cap of Maintenance, which dates from 1580, is described. The author's enthusiasm for this project is apparent; she reports it is not the complexity of the conservation which requires most decisions but the unravelling of centuries of repair work and changes to the structure of the object. The author was able to undertake this work only because of her experience and knowledge of textiles. All later additions were eliminated. There is a description of the condition of the original textile piece. The methods of conservation are described. The use of an adhesive to line the old textile may be controversial.
