Discusses the use of adhesives in conjunction with uncatalyzed silane-based consolidants, based on study of two deteriorated stone sculptures in the British Museum: 1) an Egyptian limestone block statue dating from 1200-1000 BC; and 2) a limestone stela of Amen-mes dating from the 20th dynasty. The silane tested is uncatalyzed methyl trimethoxy silane (MTMOS), produced by Dow-Corning as T.40149 and by Dynamit-Nobel as Dynaslyan MTMS. The powerful solvent properties of uncatalyzed silane require that the presence of soluble materials such as adhesives and paint media should be fully investigated before it is used on any particular object.
