Abstract
The paper deals with the refiring of three pieces of Greek Attic pottery which had been damaged by fire. All three were fragmentary and covered with black soot which could not be removed mechanically. Conservation materials used prior to the exposure to fire had been carbonized by the fire. The ethics of refiring because of its effects on thermoluminescence (TL) dating are discussed by the authors and the technology of Attic vase manufacture described. By experiment it was found that refiring at 400°C caused the soot and organic remains to be burned off the pottery. Restoration was then completed in the normal manner.
