Abstract
Chemical, physiochemical, physical, and biological factors that caused the deterioration of a wall painting are detailed. Chemical and physiochemical factors, mainly decreasing pH, caused the formation of Ca(HCO<sub>3</sub>)<sub>2</sub>, and sulfides present permitted the development of S bacteria which oxidized S to H<sub>2</sub>So<sub>4</sub>. <i>Penicillium implicatum on the painting caused a reduction of azurite, malachite, and red Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>. Pb dyes were subjected to H<sub>2</sub>SO<sub>4</sub> action leading to color changes. Increased moisture of the gallery resulted in the formation of Ca (OH)<sub>2</sub>, Ca(HCO<sub>3</sub>)<sub>2</sub>, fungi development, etc., thus bringing into action the mechanism causing the deterioration. -- AATA
