Abstract
An integrated lining system to supplement existing methods was developed specifically to avoid the injurious combination of surface pressure combined with heat and penetrating adhesives. The concept is based on a contact silicone adhesive requiring no heat or pressure and which does not enter the structure of the painting. Cupping and other deformations of the painting are flattened by use of specially designed mechanical strainers that apply lateral tension upon the edges of the painting, instead of surface pressure. Paintings that structural degeneration requiring penetrating adhesives are treated on a newly designed Electroplaque Hot Table that holds the components of painting and lining down flat by electrostatic attraction, avoiding application of surface pressure.
