Freeze-drying was found to be the obvious treatment (involving minimal man hours) for water-logged leather. After processing lubricants were too time-consuming and contained toxic chemicals such as hexane; therefore a pre-freeze drying lubricant, glycerol in a 10-30% aqueous solution was used. The leather is soaked in distilled water, cleaned, soaked for 10 days in a 15-25% glycerol solution with a fungicide, wiped dry and then freeze dried. Results show small weight loss and distortion and good flexibility. -- AATA
