Abstract
Artifacts such as painted bricks, wood, silk, and etc experienced infiltration of large quantity of saline- alkali from the soil while buried underground in the Hexi Corridor of Gansu province. The infiltration is the result of a long-term effect of the region's special geological feature which has a high content of saline alkali. The saline alkali recrystallized within the artifacts. The changes in temperature and humidity after the excavation led to paint falling off the brick, cracking of wood and embrittlement of the silk textiles. The conservation carried out for the wooden slips includes surface cleaning, reinforcement through infiltration, desalinization, softening and shape recovery. The artifacts are in good condition after treatment. This procedure can be used as reference for the conservation of other wooden artifacts unearthed from the same region.
