Abstract
Waterlogged textiles excavated from a 17th century aristocratic tomb include embroidered silk insignias, silk costumes, silk fabrics and fragments. This article offers a glimpse of the previous treatments of excavated wet textiles in Korea. This paper also aims to clean and sterilize textile relics with materials previously unused in Korea. Small silk fragments were used as samples. Wet cleaning with a 0.37 percent sodium lauryl sulfate solution gave samples acceptable clean condition with shiny surface and unfaded color. The cleaning effect of detergents on textiles was evaluated by visual observation and digital microscopy. This study also incorporated the use of diluted ethanol on textile relics before wet cleaning as a general disinfectant. The conservation of insignias and costumes was also described as case studies. In case of robes with detached lining, polyester net was voluminously filled inside robe or between layers of robe for wet cleaning in order to remove soils efficiently.
