During the last 20 years the job of the textile conservator has evolved from working for one single collection in the Ethnographic Museum, towards working for all ten municipal museums of Antwerp. This article looks at the changes in the work-process and work content, and at the overarching Department of Collection Policy/ Conservation and Management, the practical organization, how decisions are made and taken, and the background and role of the director of the department. The advantages of interdisciplinary working, collaboration with private conservators and specialized training courses are mentioned, as well as how the central museum depot functions. The communication policy and the importance of the publication of the annual report is explained. With the construction of a new museum which englobes the collections of 4 museums, new challenges await the textile conservator. The functioning and organization of the Department might be useful as an example or model for colleagues elsewhere.
