Abstract
Carminic acid, the red anthroquinone dyestuff from cochineal insects, is a potent feeding deterrent to ants. Other quinones in insects and plants are known to be feeding deterrents, possibly including anthroquinones in teak heartwood. Carminic acid was identified by thinlayer chromatography. -- AATA
