Abstract
The aim of this work is to characterize Roman ceramics produced in Augst, Baden, Bern and Avenches, with the purpose, first of all, to present the differences between them, and secondly between the Roman ceramics produced in other European centers. Series of shards recovered in these four locations have been researched from a chemical, physical and mineralogical point of view (294 chemical and mineralogical analyses). By means of chemical characteristics several groups can be distinguished. The physical characteristics are quite similar for the four ceramic productions; at the same time, there is a minimal variation in the mineralogical associations identified in the wares. The firing temperatures have been determined by the comparison of the mineralogical associations identified in the shards with the mineralogical content found by means of laboratory experiments. For the greater part of the shards, the firing temperatures are between 850 and 950 degrees C. A minority pertaining to the Augst center displays a slightly higher temperature while another minority pertaining to the Bern center displays slightly lower temperatures. By means of correlation diagrams and statistical methods it is possible to attribute to Baden the origin of the Terra Sigillata found in Augst, it is possible to confirm the production of Terra Sigillata in the center of Avenches and it has also been possible to attribute at this last center the origin of four shards recovered in Martigny.
