Abstract
Eighty shards from two Roman manufactures of Augusta Raurica (1st c. BC and 2nd c. AD) have been studied with mineralogical X- rays and chemical (XRFA) methods. The red shards are characterized by the paragenesis: quartz & plagioclass & kalifeldspar & hematite. The grey colored shards contain quartz and magnetite and spinell and plagioclase and kalifeldspar. Gehlenite and/or diooside/wollastonite are present only in lime-rich shards. The analyzed shards belong chemically to a CaO-poor ceramic and can be distinguished from the other known Swiss manufactures by some chemical parameters (e.g. CaO/MgO or Ba/Cr correlation diagrams). The firing conditions were either reducing, oxidizing or reducing with an oxidizing cooling phase. The firing temperatures exceeded in a few cases 900 degrees C. (entire text of entry)
