Describes the restoration of <i>Demokritos in Meditation in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Copenhagen. The painting had previously been lined with an adhesive which consisted of a mixture of flour, animal glue and Venice turpentine; in the upper half of the painting the original canvas, the adhesive, and the lining canvas were all very decayed due to the attack of micro-organisms <i>(Aspergillus). The old lining was removed, the painting attached to a loom with paper, which by means of vinyl tape was made airtight, and a vacuum envelope was produced within the loom, where it was possible to establish a pressure on both sides or on one of them. It was also possible to place the whole vacuum envelope on a vacuum hot table covered with a membrane and to let this pressure adjust for local cuppings. During this work the hot table was covered with a 2 mm thick woolen felt. Sturgeon glue was used for the impregnation of the original canvas. The new adhesive consisted of wheat flour and gelatine with an addition of sodium fluoride as a fungicide. The painting was cleaned with a mixture of acetone and white spirit.
