Abstract
Autoradiographic image enhancement has been investigated as a possible technique for dose reduction in mammography. This is a post-development enhancement process, originally developed at Marshall Space Flight Center for use in astronomical research, utilizing thiourea labeled with sulfer-35. The results of this study indicate that mammograms underexposed by as much as a factor of ten can be autoradiographically intensified so that the enhanced image is comparable with a normal exposure. Limitations to the routine use of this method include cost, processing time and the problem of disposal of radioactive solutions.
