Specific problems in the analysis and classification of archaic fabrics are discussed from both a theoretical and methodological point of view, and an explicit statement of the nature and goals of textile typology is offered. Stress is laid upon the definition of categories in terms of structural variables in order to lessen subjectivity, which contribute, at the same time, to the overall systematizing and standardizing of analytic procedures. A brief outline (historic and prehistoric) of Andean fabric production, and a synthesis of current attitudes and the general nature of archaeological fabric studies in Peru and Northern Chile, is presented.
