This article describes a collection of letters written by Charles Darwin. Unfortunately, some of the letters were sealed in folders of cellulose nitrate, a substance that is chemically unstable and inevitably destructive to paper. These letters are now a total loss. An effort is being made to recapture the writing with ultra violet photography.
