Abstract
Using Bulgarian examples, discusses the ways in which national characteristics of the environment influence the development of architectural creativity. In Bulgaria, the aim of preserving the environmental context in time has become a national policy to preserve cultural values. This effort has expanded from the most specific level of the monument, to the settlement level, involving townscapes and city planning, to the broadest territorial level. At the territorial level, the aim is to create an integral strategy for the preservation of the national character of the environment of nations, regions, and zones.
