Abstract
The Textile Institute Textile Finishing Group conference in Manchester reported on flammability regulations in the United Kingdom and focused on upholstered furniture, which must also apply to imported covering materials. Tests for ignition resistance for upholstery were improved. New standards to be issued include BS 7157, 7175, and 7176 that pertain to the ignition of tent fabrics, mattresses, covers, and pillows. The effect of flame retardant materials on performance and appearance and the effects of laundering were discussed. Blending flame retardant fibers, their advantages in furnishing, and flammability tests for furniture were also discussed.
