Abstract
The archaeological sites of Kilwa Kisiwani and Songomnara are situated in the Tanzania islands which are also sites of present day human settlements. The author examines problems of conservation of these areas, in the light of internationsl recommendations. He urges strategies which ensure: 1) the protection of monumental remains for cultural educational and touristic purposes; 2) the preservation of areas with buried archaeological resources for future research work; 3) the planning and management of the present settlement patterns in such a way that they respect the archaeological heritage.
