This article deals with Denninger's work in South and Southwest Africa and the sites he visited in the Drakensberg Mountains, the Limpopo Valley and in Matabeleland. There is a description of the sites, the types of paint most likely used, the subjects painted, which included galleons by which early explorers arrived, and how the materials used in the paint had withstood weathering. Some wallpaintings were covered over by silicate encrustations which, luckily, remained transparent. Dating is also important in determining the time sequence in which various areas were settled by specific populations. The method becomes more unreliable for wallpaintings approaching or exceeding an age of 2000 years. For this type of painting, carbon dating or other methods still remain valuable tools of analysis.
