Two questions arise from the discovery of the Mucking mould-- the first of its date to have been found in England: 1) Should one think of an itinerant bronze-smith making comparatively few pieces at each stop, whether from his own patterns or copying from brooches already in use, which could, of course, have been heirlooms? 2) Has the metallurgist (by demonstrating the ease with which copies can be made) weakened the main archaeological dating tool for the Migration period--the style history of its fine metalwork?
