Abstract
Spark testing can be profitable to every company that produces, finishes, fabricates or ware houses steels. Spark testing plays a vital role in catching mixed steel and sorting them out as per chemistry. Of course, the test is not to be considered as a substitute for a chemical analysis nor as an unequivocal method for identifying unknown steels. It is based on the idea that character of the spark should be similar when spark-streams are examined from a number of samples of the same materials. The moment a sample shows sparks of different character as compared to the other sample of the same lot mix-up is suspected. While in theory the spark testing appears to be quite simple and easy it is not true that all and one type of steels can be distinguished from each other. A chart is provided for identifying steels on the basis of spark picture. Limitations of spark testing include: it should be performed under shade and not under sun light; a standard sample must be kept ready for reference and to avoid confusion; and, a color blind person cannot become a spark tester.
