Only one mile out on her maiden voyage, the 200-foot royal Swedish warship Wasa sank to the bottom of Stockholm Harbor in 1628. In 1961, she was raised intact from 110 feet of water. The Wasa was refloated 333 years after her sinking and has since served as a vehicle with which to educate the visiting public in how sailors lived aboard a warship in the seventeenth century. Renovating and restoring the ship has been a mammoth task unequalled anywhere in the world.
