Abstract
A description of the restoration of a deteriorated helmet, made of crocodile skin lined with goatskin (the method of manufacture is also described). It was fumigated with illo-spezialgas, then cleaned with dlm fettemulsion 4060 (10% lipoderm sa, 10% lipoderm a, 10% karion f and water at 60 c) applying the foam cleaner with either a sponge or soft brush. Before lubricating, the helmet was mounted on a specially made mould (preparation described) to avoid distortion during treatment. A leather softener (lederweicher sp) was then dripped onto the helmet; after 2 days the helmet had been uniformly moistened. It was then reshaped, the fragments attached filling gaps with animal glues. The ear muffs were similarly treated, then the whole stabilised with pliancote. Finally a leather support was placed inside. Photographs.
