Abstract
In the first exhibition of the time period of Emperor Franz Joseph the author emphasizes the changeover from fabrication in guild workshops to industrial workshops and luxury fashion houses as well as the greater possibilities for turning out garments in the home as more material becomes available in trade and the sewing machine makes its appearance. The 1848 revolution seems to have had little effect on fashion, the crinoline, taking its cue from the rococo period, found its greatest acceptance in the 1850's, then was replaced by the tournure which turned out to be equally impractical. Men's clothing, on the other hand, became more and more adapted to the professions while civil service uniforms came to resemble military uniforms more and more closely. -- AATA
