Abstract
Underwater archaeological research has dealt with sites and objects dating from the Neolithic period to the 19th century. Background is given on archaeological research on these sites -- work done during the 1850's, 1935-40, and in 1952; modern methods have been developing since 1972. In 1980, CNRAS was officially established to oversee the continuation of this work, both site management and conservation of artifacts (including analysis of materials).
