Weathering had destroyed 19th-century wall paintings in a war-damaged church. To protect them after the destruction of the church, they had been covered by a layer of cheesecloth and overpainted. Later, when the church was repaired, this cover was removed and soot settled on the surface of the still further damaged frescoes. The restoration involved first cleaning them mechanically, then with the help of appropriate solvents to remove the adhesives from the covering. Limewater was used for the consolidation. Finally, the frescoes were completely retouched to obtain an appearance corresponding to the original painting. -- AATA
