Excavation of Phidias' workshop at Olympia, Greece, revealed the existence of a foundry. A large number of remains connected with casting bronze statues were found in two pits. Drops of metal and slags still adhering to fragments of the molds, melting pots, and parts of the furnace were analyzed by chemical and scanning electron analysis. It was found that both copper and bronze were used at the foundry. Alloy preparation and casting techniques could be reconstructed. -- AATA
