Abstract
This article describes the discovery, underwater excavation, long term storage and conservation of a Roman shipwreck in Marseilles. Three possible methods of treatment are discussed; freeze-drying was considered most suitable. PEG treatments were rejected because of concerns about reversibility, and gamma ray induced polymerisation of styrene polyester resin, in-situ, could not be used because of the limited size of the available treatment chamber. After some initial tests, freeze-drying of the shipwreck was conducted at atmospheric pressure, rather than under vacuum as is normal. This was done because the large vacuum chamber needed for vacuum-freeze-drying was considered a safety hazard. See also AATA 23-2303.
