Abstract
Naphthalene is a safe and effective insect repellent when used in closed containers and with most materials. However, it should not be used in open storage conditions for it will affect the health of staff. It can cause problems in ethnographic collections through the softening and recrystallizing of some resins onto fragile objects; its impurities can corrode metals.
