The pH of the cellulosic material was monitored before, directly after, and a year after treatment. No satisfactory result using various alkaline reagents for paper-deacidification and ammonia vapor was obtained due to discoloration, swelling, and difficulty of penetrating the resistant cuticle of the basketry.
