Abstract
Display Daguerreotypes will appear best to an observer if they are displayed at their maximum contrast range and at their greatest image definition. The appearance of a Daguerreotype is the result of the amount of light scatter from the particles that make up the image microstructure. Scattering efficiency can be improved by adjustments in the viewing geometry made up of the viewer, the Daguerreotype, and the source of incident illumination. Additional improvement is gained if the Daguerreotype is displayed against a dark field with no low level background illumination, thus eliminating unwanted reflection off the image. On a more sophisticated level, the efficiency of light scattering can be enhanced by matching the imageparticle size distribution to the wavelength distribution (lambda) of the illuminant or by using a narrow band illumination source with a peak output (lambda) which is matched to the peak of the Daguerreotype's image particle size distribution curve.
