Abstract
An iron, socketed, axe-head from Eskilstuna, Sweden, ca 1st-5th centuries AD, contains martensitic streaks about 18 millimeters thick with a nickel content up to 6.9% in a matrix with an average nickel content about 0.5%. A content of 0.4% carbon and 0.02% phosphorus for the nickel-rich streaks is considered to rule out a meteoritic origin. Other artifacts of similar structure and composition are identified, and it appears that they were made by the principle of folding, forging and welding. Experiments in the reconstruction of this technique are described. The origin of the nickel-rich component of the iron remains unknown. See also AATA 17-753 and 18-734.
